Auschwitz. Cambiare nome?

AUSCHWITZ
What's in a Name?
The Warsaw Voice, 26 April 2006
The Polish proposal that the name of the former extermination camp should be changed initially met with criticism, and then support from Jewish organizations... Organizations and Jewish institutions disagreeing with Stern's statement also expressed their opinions. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) supported the Polish efforts to change the name. In a letter sent to the UNESCO, the ADL expressed "full support for the Polish government's aspirations" so that the official name of the camp may emphasize that the camp was built and run by the Nazi Germany. "As an organization whose main goal of activity is to cherish the memory of Holocaust, we share the anxiety of Poland stemming from the fact of the camp being frequently defined as 'Polish'," reads the letter. Minister of Culture Kazimierz M. Ujazdowski April 20 met Ambassador of Israel David Peleg, who presented the position of the Israeli Yad Vashem Institute, expressing understanding and support for the Polish initiative. "Showing Auschwitz as a Polish camp is a serious distortion of history," said Peleg, thanking the Polish government for the "care for the memory and history of the victims of the camp in Oświęcim." The ministry expressed the conviction that the opinion of Yad Vashem would be a significant argument during the UNESCO's July session in Vilnius, where the Polish motion may be considered.
